Hampshire is a historic county on the south coast of England, known for its varied landscape and long connection with Britain’s past. Much of the county is characterised by rolling chalk hills that form part of the Hampshire Downs and the South Downs, while major rivers such as the Test and Itchen flow south toward the coast. The region also includes the New Forest—one of the largest surviving areas of ancient woodland in England—as well as important natural harbours like Portsmouth Harbour and Southampton Water.

The county has been settled for thousands of years, with recorded history stretching back to Roman Britain, when Winchester (then Venta Belgarum) was a key town. During the Anglo-Saxon period, Hampshire became central to the Kingdom of Wessex, and later its ports grew wealthy through trade, shipbuilding, and fishing. Today Hampshire is known for combining historic cities such as Winchester and maritime centres like Southampton and Portsmouth with rural national parks and traditional villages, making it a place where coastal industry, heritage, and countryside coexist.
